I love to join the dancing - a lot of the dances are very easy to pick up even if you have not attended classes. Haven't been to an Obon in a few years, though, even the one literally down the street from us, due to schedule issues.
I cannot do the intricacies of Kimono (don't have the under-Juban undergarments, for one), but I CAN at least wear a yukata (just fine for Obon!) and tie a butterfly bow in a hanhaba obi. I also have geta, but not yukata-appropriate zori (but nice thong sandals will do in a pinch anyway.)
We couldn't make it today - too utterly wiped from a week of Tai Chi Boot Camp. :p
Perhaps Oakland might be doable - after Taiko class that day...? Hmmm....
