My evil plan to take over the Known World
I appear to have successfully infected my Eurocentric Kingdom Of Kingdom's e-list with a haiku virus. It is a Most Excellent Thing Indeed.
So, was it an epic weekend?
Oh, and I also got to meet
acanthusleaf in person and admire the exquisite jewelry she makes. I was hard pressed not to blow my Pennsic budget on silver shinies. Now I know and can budget for something nice from her next time.

The backstory: Our current King's tag word for his current reign, and in particular, this weekend's Crown Tourney has been "epic." ANYWAY, Saturday evening, I'm washing dishes in the BC, party noise from the Royal pavilion wafts across the darkened listfield, lit by torches and the surreal glow of a Ferris wheel in the adjacent lot where a carnival is going on. Suddenly, the partiers start shouting "EPIC!" I look up from my dishpan and shout back "HAIKU!" I don't know if they heard me, but my campmates did and we began discussing whether a seventeen syllable poetic form could BE epic.
mamapduck once wrote a sestina using "xylophone" and "kiwifruit" as elements, so of course, I had to consider the problem. But not TOO much, it does not do to overthink haiku sometimes.

To match the spring sun's glory -
A throne to be won.
Others are playing. Some of them are pretty good! I love when that happens.

The drive up was epic. I left San Leandro at 4. Google Maps said it was 3 hours to Red Bluff. Google Maps does not allow for the traffic volume of quittin' time on Friday, which I already knew. It was more like 4 1/2 if you add in a gas stop and an interminable wait at the McDonalds Of The Damned for what was supposed to be a quick bite to eat. The Lack Of Clue at the gate was epic. The young lady who took my money and signed me in handed me a map. It had buildings and racetracks on it and no clue where any of our temporary weekend venues were supposed to be. Nobody working gate knew where the listfield was or where the BC was. I couldn't seem to find road access to anything that looked like where I needed to be. I went back out the gate, parked, walked in, FOUND the BC on foot, was informed by Roswitha that yes, there was another gate, mere yards from the one I'd come in and I could pull in. So I went out, explained all this useful information to the people there, then proceeded in to set up.
Storytelling with the King was epic. Sorta. I had a small hand in suggesting. Uther's take on "Where The Wild Things Are" must be seen to be appreciated, and "The Kiss That Missed" is a charmer as well. The cookies were made to go away. The audience got some, the rest ended up at Heralds' Point. And I have just remembered that I forgot to retrieve the tin. Oh well.
The tourney was definitely epic. Something like 70 combatants, including several of our northern neighbors from An Tir. The final between Duke Jade and Baron Barek was likewise suitably epic (a gas to watch). Jade won for Countess Kaaren Haakonsdottir.
The fencing tourney on Sunday morning was epic. That list had something like 40 participants. As the weather seemed threatening and we were worried about having to tear down in the rain, we got as much packed and ready before last court. There was a knighting: Eric van Roosebeck. I confess I do not know him well, but it was a nice ceremony and a nice ending to a good event.
