Creativity - it's the LAW!

" Populace of the West! Pay Heed! Their Majesties challenge all subjects to compete in an Arts and Sciences Championship to be held
at October Crown.....

In addition to the previously published competitions of:

•Period instrumental piece
•Armor, for people or animals

The following categories have been added for the Championship:

•Research Paper (no more than 10 pages) – can be any subject that is of particular interest to you: a battle, shoes, fortifications,
jewelry, migrational patterns of Viking raiders, etc. You know there is something that you have been itching to research.

•Textiles – can be: clothing, a favor, a loom, period tie-dye (if you can document it).

•Ballistics – Might be: arrows, catapult, throw in your own ideas!

•Period Private Parts – Etchings, underwear, you have a naughty mind. Make it work!."

 It says "challenge," not "command."

The thing is, I CAN document period tie-dye and was planning on working on that next anyhow. I can whack out a functional and accurate staff-sling in about 10 minutes with a tree branch, a pocket knife, some string and a piece of leather. Got hurdy gurdy, will travel. And ten pages on any topic I want?

The thing is, I've got nothing to prove.

Well...

I commend their Majesties for encouraging the sorts of activities that are the reason the SCA lasted beyond one little backyard party. I don't even have a problem with the format (although "command" may have been more royal).

I think this could be a good "lead by example" moment.

So, why worry about proving anything? Why not do something that might inspire others? How about "How to" handouts that can go with your item and documentation. Document it, do it, provide How to's so other's can do it too. I personally would love to see more "How to" flyers to go with neat A&S stuff - Honestly, this is something that I just came up with, and I'm going to start doing myself: Document a Mary Rose chest, make a Mary Rose chest, have a "How to" so other's can make the same chest.

Once again, thanks for inspiring me to do something neat! :)

You don't need to have anything to prove. It would make their Majesties happy if lots of folk enter. There are bunches on that list that you could enter with one hand tied behind your back. Others would find what you do inspiring. It sounds like an all around good thing to me, and I encourage you to go for it!
