Spike needs hakama

Remember how I succumbed to A&S burnout back in October? No?

Well, I have acquired materials for drum building. And for some prototype paper lanterns for Rising Sun.

Last night I pulled out the indigo batik fabric I bought at the quilting place when I was there with [livejournal.com profile] kproche  and [livejournal.com profile] bovil  and started a pair of hakama. That's a quarter sitting on the fabric for scale purposes.
It's a little crude, being batik, and the pattern repeat is a bit on the small side for pre-1600, but it's not bad. After last year's Estrella mudfest, I'm thinking a set of boy clothes in washable fabric are a really good idea.

Being as I'm not built like the average Asian male, these are six panel, rather than four panel hakama.  This should give me more fabric to play with when I pleat it into the waist ties. I'm also skipping the crotch gusset - when I made my tattsukebakama, I got them to fit just fine without one. As long as the crotch is low enough, it doesn't need one.

I should have the legs assembled this evening. Then it's just pleating and attaching waist ties.

Nice fabric! My local quilting place has some good batiks, but rarely anything in indigo.

http://www.quiltingbee.com/ is where the Boys took me. They had some fun stuff - and it was a sale day so we got some good price breaks on things.

Ah, here it is, scroll down:

And I bought a yard of this just 'cause. It'll probably end up being a furoshiki:

WE MUST ALL HAVE FUROSHIKI ALL OF US! NOW GO BLEACH YOUR EYEBROWS, no, wait, I didn't actually suggest that even though I totally did.

I have several furoshiki - two were hand-me-downs from the Duchess Maythen Get It Out Of My House Collection, two were gifts.

I even use them - because I tried carrying my shit in a paper lantern once and it doesn't work.

If Tousando's the right place to start, I'm heading there next, but do you recall any PDF'd (or similar document) hakama pattern mods with O-hara (big belly but not Sumo-ka) gaijin in mind ? If nothing comes to your fingertips, no worries.

Effingham-sensei has patterns on his website - though why he insists on hiding it in the ARMOR Miscellany is beyond me! Go here:
http://www.sengokudaimyo.com/katchu/katchu.ch16.html (Read the bit about jiggering measurements to personalize fit)

and here for the actual PDF:

Perfect! thanks much. (He does note something about mirroring these in the "regular clothing" section "coming soon"... or words to that effect...

Yes, but his "under construction" stuff has been under construction since before I started doing Japanese, so breath-holding is strictly contraindicated.

Yeah, I liked what he had for men's clothing, so I went looking for women's clothing info and eventually came to the conclusion that he didn't think women should wear clothes...or something.

I should tell him that - he'd bust a gut laughing.

On the other hand, how often do you research stuff you're never, ever going to wear? I can't see Tony in karaginu mo....

Please do tell him. No, I can't see him in karaginu mo either.

I need to get back in touch with Effingham-sensei myself; he told me that he had documentation for Fujioka as a period surname and would send it to me and it's obviously gotten lost in his stack of 'to-do' things.
