You don't really need the pickle press to tsukemono. I have one, but I only use it if I'm doing a big batch of something. Most of the time I put the pickles-in-process in a bowl, cover with plastic wrap then put a saucer/small bowl on top and pile on a weight, like a couple of cans. Cheap, low-tech, works great.
