Giri is a funny thing

I know I recently posted on how abhorrent SCA arts competitions are to me and why.
However, I was browsing the Kingdom newsletter last night (it only arrived five days into the month it's for), and discovered that the Sciences competition for Mists' Fall Coronet is "Fans: documentable ways to stay cool"
It would be remiss of me not to properly educate the populace on the origins and artistry of an invention - namely, the folding fan - unseen in Western Europe until the Portuguese brought them back from the Far East in the 16th century.
Besides, I've been meaning to rebuild the hiogi I made for Twelfth Night anyway.....
