Why yes, I suppose I am smirking a bit. It's hard to be humble when you're the hottest thing at Tanabata.

Get a wooden comb, ladies. Shun the boar bristle brush, save the plastic pin-bristles for shedding out your dog. Get a wooden comb. Horn or bone are also good.

One of my Pennsic purchases was a wooden comb from the Spanish Peacock. This brings my wooden comb ownership up to three. One (from Historic Enterprises) lives in my camp box, one in my purse, one (a Chinese one from eBay) in the house.

Why this mania for wooden combs? They don't generate static the way a plastic comb does. The wood also  absorbs and redistributes the natural oils from your hair the way nature intended. If you find one that has two sides, use the wider teeth to start and remove tangles, then switch to the finer teeth - they're just the thing for getting dust and dirt out of your hair at an event.

I use a wide toothed plastic shower comb for my first combout when my hair is wet. After that I switch to wood.

I take a damp nail brush to the teeth of my combs periodically to remove  excess crud and dirt. About once a month I rub a drop or two of camelia oil into the wood (other vegetable based oil would work fine). I also occasionally put the camelia oil on my hair too.

I still have breakage, but it's WAY down. My hair just feels happier.
