Sent today to the kingdom and society level officers whom it concerns:
Yesterday, I participated in a local SCA demonstration at the opening
of a game store in Concord, California. I am writing to express my concern
at what I believe to be a well meant, but misguided interpretation of the
Society's media policy.
I refer to http://www.sca.org/docs/mediapolicy.pdf
Appendix I, Item 2. Image to the Outside World.
"Use vocabulary that is both meaningful and palatable to the public.
i. Avoid the word “Mundane.” Never use it with the media—its patronizing
and insulting. A better term is “Modern-era.”
ii. Never discuss the following topics with the media
1. Religion
2. Lewd behavior that can be perceived as a form of sexual harassment.
3. Alcohol making, preparation, studies, distribution, sale, etc.
4. Households."
Participants in the demonstration were instructed specifically not to use the
word "medieval" on the grounds that it rhymes with "evil."
Medieval is a perfectly reasonable, legitimate adjective which describes
much of the period under study by members of the Society. I don't believe
it is unreasonable to assume that the average member of the public does not
know what this word means.
I firmly believe that the term "medieval" constitutes "meaningful and palatable"
vocabulary in discussing the activities of our so-called educational organization.
I will reluctantly forego the pleasure of teaching adults and children alike about
medieval music if I cannot CALL it medieval music. That is what it is.
