Last taiko class of spring session
Jun. 17th, 2008 09:13 pmLesson 10 went pretty well. We were down to five people and two instructors again.
Blew through renshu and three line drill in good order. Everyone knows 'em by now. We drilled "Matsuri Daiko" a fair bit, especially since Doreen had missed a couple of weeks and had to get back up to speed, then worked the chorus for "Jishin." Sensei put one of the drums on the odaiko stand and we took turns in pairs playing the chorus. (Photo of REAL taiko players who don't suck attached for the non-taiko geeks to see the drum position.)
It's pretty amazing to feel two drumheads vibrating like mad when someone is playing opposite. I am very proud of the fact that I (a) didn't let the change of plane make me forget the sequence, (b) didn't bark my knuckles on the bottom rim of the drum, (c) didn't hit myself in the nose and (d) remembered the section that's supposed to be a crescendo. On the other hand, my shoulders feel tight and my left elbow is a mite twingy because I was trying so hard not to screw up that I was gripping the bachi for all I was worth instead of keeping them loose in my hands. Sensei Shannon caught me at it and made me hold my bachi with only my thumb and first two fingers. It helped. Some.
I'm registered for the summer session, starting next Tuesday. Don. Don. Don. Ka-ra-ka-ra.....
