Note to self
Jul. 30th, 2008 06:23 amI heard one of those helpful little PSAs on the radio about conserving water again this morning. The shortage is real. I passed a reservoir on that drive to and from Santa Cruz last weekend and it's low all right. That's why I still haven't washed the ash fall from this summer's earlier fires off my truck.
So why is it that I get doused by sprinklers at the supermarket while trying to shake a gallon of water off a head of lettuce before I can thrust it into a bag? Then there's the waste caused by the need for those sodden rolls of paper towels supplied for the purpose of wiping off one'ssopping romantically rain-kissed broccoli and string beans.
There's no need for it. We got along for years without artistically staged thunderstorms in our grocery stores. Do we really need crystalline beads of fake rain to tell us to buy vegetables?
Time to write some letters.

Sent this afternoon: "Several times daily I hear PSAs on the radio about water conservation and shortages in our area. Yet Nob Hill Foods continues to run sprinklers in the produce department. I do not need glistening beads of water and sound effects to convince me to buy vegetables I'm going to buy anyway and there is no point in irrigating crops that have been picked. Please stop wasting water that is needed elsewhere.
Thank you for your consideration."

EBMUD sent me a form letter e-mail telling me they would get back in five business days.
