No more taiko for weeks!
Aug. 19th, 2008 09:39 pmI showed up this evening in the navy pinstriped yukata* with the yellow plaid obi and the jubako Tatsuya-dono gave me filled with sesame sticks and wasabi peas in one tray and fresh strawberries and butter wafer cookies in the other. Jaws dropped, I tell you. Shannon-sensei complimented me in what he assures me is extremely rusty Japanese. I assured me that my Japanese was limited to nouns about clothing, flowers, armor and food. Then of course, I had to explain why I knew armor terms. (*I'd thought about the chambray yukata with the big windowpane check, but it's cut a bit narrower than the navy and I wanted sufficient overlap of the front panels given that I would be standing with my feet wider than shoulder-width apart to play.)
The intermediates did a couple of pieces, we did "Matsuri" and both our drill pieces for a few friends and parents. If I ever play in yukata again, I have to remember to bring a long enough tie to tasuke my sleeves out of my way.
I gave Shannon-sensei my payment for the drum building workshop and he said he had seven confirmations so it's a go for the Saturday of Labor Day weekend and the Saturday after that. The next class sessions do not start until 9/16. We discussed my moving to the intermediate group. Sensei wanted to make sure I was comfortable with my progress so far and all that. Honestly, I kind of enjoy dog paddling madly at the deep end of the pool. After watching the solos the intermediates did on "Jishin," I'm not intimidated. I'm not ready to run away and audition for Kodo, but I'm not intimidated.
On the GWW front,
sasha_khan is trying (admittedly, not very hard) to convince me to teach a class. Or two. Or take over the world or something.
On the health front, I am attempting to do something about the placement of the needle on my scale. I've done too much comfort eating this year. I know what to do, I did it before, and the only reason we're talking damage control as opposed to full monty diet martyrdom is the fact that I'm still cracking out two 14-minute-miles a day, five days a week.
