Operation Okedodaiko
Jan. 17th, 2009 03:18 pmAfter several days of waking up at odd hours thanks to the time zone change from the East Coast, I finally slept most of the way through the night: one bathroom run at about 3 AM, then out like a snuffed candle until a positively decadent 9 AM.
Blindingly blue sky, mild (as I write this, it's in the high 60's). I made some oatmeal, then attacked the small cardboard tube I'd acquired for the shime-daiko when dumpster diving at work. Earlier this week, proceeding on the assumption that a hand saw capable of cutting drywall would work for this project, I'd acquired a nice little Vaughan Bear pull-saw at OSH for about $13. Trust the Japanese to come up with the pull saw. It's just so much easier to start the cut by pulling it toward you, and the saw made quick work of both the thick cardboard of the spool tubes and the thinner, plastic laminated cardboard of the 12" concrete form tubes.
The tubes are out in the alley with the first coat of Rustoleum gloss black drying. They'll definitely need at least one more coat, especially the concrete form tubes, which are school bus yellow. I'll check them when I run down to switch laundry loads and see if I can get another coat on today.

EDIT: Nope - too tacky to do coat #2. That'll go on tomorrow. I used up two rolls of strapping tape on some of the djembe rings. I need to pick up a couple more rolls to finish the ones I have left, but doing this production-line style means I can actually build four drums in little more time than it would take to do one.
