Today, while hundreds of thousands of Americans ditched work in one way or another, I did my job - while my company's IT department spammed my email at least twice to remind us all that streaming audio and video via the internet is against company policy.

I cut five lay-off checks and processed three new-hire packets: different projects in different parts of the state with differing manpower needs fueled these seemingly opposing actions. I collected time cards and cross checked them to be sure we had everyone's, because our guys should get paid in an accurate and timely fashion, new president or no new president .

I stimulated the local economy by purchasing a chicken salad sandwich and a drink from the Chinese couple who run a nearby sandwich shop.

At 3:50 PM, work for the day done, I did an internet search before shutting down my computer for the afternoon  and read a transcript of the inaugural speech of our new President. Black letters on white, stripped of audio or visual impact, it is still powerful stuff.

By the time I got home, the news had ground it up into snippets and sound bites and was far more interested in interviewing locals who had watched the inauguration or reporting from balls that hadn't gotten started yet. No big. Celebrate. It's worth celebrating. Tomorrow the break is over and the part where we dig our country out of the deep hole we let it fall into begins.

Taiko class kicked my ass because I'd missed last week and it's a new piece with a couple of left-hand lead sequences that don't come easily to me. Still, I seem to be getting a little better at catching up on new stuff. A little.
