The sayagata jacquard silk looked great when it came out of the dye pot. I had folded everything and dip dyed it on a plastic hanger, then hung it to dry in my shower stall. However, there was some odd wicking at the edge of the dyed area during the drying process, so the ombre effect isn't even!!!! I do have some dye remover, so I may attempt to soak the area that's supposed to be white in that and see if it helps.

The concert was great. Wait, let me say that the performances were terrific. Necati Celik (oud), Timucin Cevikoglu (frame drum and vocals), and Yavuz Akalin (ney) are rock stars, and the music was lovely. I can't tell you what they played other than in the most general terms, some Turkish "classical" music and what were described as "Sufi hymns." Not only were there no programs, but we were lucky someone bothered to translate for us poor non-Turkish speaking infidels. The venue was a smallish meeting room in a professional building so we were close enough to hear the delicate, breathy overtones of the ney and marvel at Mr. Celik's virtuosity on the oud. Some of the audience members were singing along quietly on the choruses of a couple of the Sufi pieces. I wish I could describe it better, but I don't have the linguistic or knowledge base. If you search http://www.lala.com/#artist/Necati_%C3%87elik you can hear some samples of Mr. Celik on oud. Marvelous stuff.

Minuses: I got shaken down for cash at the door because the idiot I called more than a week ago to charge tickets with hadn't managed to figure out how to process the transaction AND he charged us $5.00 more even though it was his fault that the ticket prices published for the event were wrong. I am going to be watching my Visa account like a hawk in case I find someone's charged tickets to Baku on it.

Nor had anyone bothered to prepare the room other than to plunk down refreshments in the back and stand around outside smoking. The performance started late because they still had to move a table and put some chairs out for the performers, and there was a moderate amount of dicking around with chairs for the audience.
Next time, put out your butts, set up the chairs before opening the doors and sell tickets at the door so you don't have to negotiate the complexities of a credit card transaction.

On the other hand, my gut feeling was that the lion's share of the ticket money is going into the hands of the artists and that is no bad thing.

[livejournal.com profile] layla_lilah had done some pre concert research on Yelp and found us a place to eat nearby called Cafe Artemis. While I'm no judge of how authentic their menu of Greek and Turkish inspired dishes is, my clay pot of izmir kofte (ground lamb, roasted potatoes with peppers and a tomatoey sauce was zesty and filling, the feta and parsley stuffed borek (imagine a cheese stuffed egg roll) were crisp and addictive, and I very much enjoyed their white sangria. We split a dessert - chocolate lava cake with ouzo and gelato.

Of note. It occurred to me that a package of five Avery transluscent 5-tabs (8 1/2 x 11) costs about $4. A package of three Plaid stencil blanks (8 x 10) costs around $4. For the almost the same price you get a slightly larger piece of plastic and two more sheets.
