One of my friends is now working over at Angel Island State Park as an interpreter at Camp Reynolds. She had a furlough day today, so I drove over to Tiburon and hopped the 10 AM ferry over to the island, along with an assortment of the general public including a teenager whose relationship with her boyfriend seemed to consist of saying black when he said white, a guy with the sort of tripod and camera set up that makes you wonder if he's compensating for something because he's unsafe to stand behind in a slowly moving line, and a bunch of people with bikes who could not seem to get the darned things up and down the ferry ramps.

"Valencia!" I cried when I spotted Teri on the dock at Ayala Cove. "We bring you BROWNIES!" I brandished my bag at her and gave her a hug.   Our trusty steed for the day was a state park golf cart. We wound up the perimeter road to Camp Reynolds, where Teri usually works. Established during the Civil War, the area includes historic houses and the old battery building at the foot of the bay.

We discovered the golf cart's battery was not up to the demands of the perimeter road as we wound our way around the island. We had to stop a couple times before arriving at Teri's apartment and had to leave the cart at the foot of the hill to charge before moving it up near the building to plug the trickle battery in. We took a brownie break, I bonded with Caboose the cat, then we went with her youngest son James down to the Immigration Station, which is now a museum. The walls are covered with Chinese calligraphic poems written by the immigrant inmates who stayed there. (I ended up picking up a copy of Island at the park store before I left.)

After burgers down at the cove, we went over to the remains of Fort McDowell and tramped around the ruins of the hospital, where I shot some photos. We ended up having to push the golf cart part of the way back to Teri's and plug it in for a bit before she took me back down to catch the last ferry back to Tiburon.
