Crown recap
Jun. 20th, 2010 05:09 pmIn brief and completely at random:
I had to go grocery shopping ANYWAY, but a five pound bag of sushi rice, a bottle of rice vinegar and some miso and mustard dressing made my Queen very happy. My King too, when I ran into him on Saturday. The more I get to know them, the more I like them, even if they do indulge in barbarian customs such as public hugging.
Nob Hill Foods' frozen "Full Circle" brand ahi steaks marinated in Mitsukan ginger dressing and seared on the grill are a definite win and I will get them again. Kept the package on block ice in my cooler - they had reached idea thaw by the time I opened the package to put them in a ziplock and marinate for an hour.
The Miyakes continue to insist upon feeding me, but at least I managed to insist upon (and elbow my way into the kitchen) to do Saturday's breakfast dishes - and I was able to share the ahi with them.
Legitimately referred to the Tosenin kosode as "this old thing." (Three whole years ago, I made it.) It's still freaking gorgeous and still gets wows from people. Though the guy I pitched my tent beside wanted to know where I'd bought "fabric like that." Once I moved closer and explained that I'd painted it, his eyes got REALLY big. Then I gave his lady the URL to fabric.com because apparently one cannot find dupioni in their neck of the woods in a store. Memory jog - he popped up on the kingdom list last summer with a number of naivete-of-newness sort of posts of the enthusiastic-but-clueless flavor. Either he's easier to take in person, or he's calmed down a bit. They seemed nice enough and made decent camp neighbors.
Was the finale of the performing arts showcase with a rendition of "O-kaji", modified slightly for solo performer. I like the booming tone of the PVC sewer-pipe taiko a lot better, but the little wooden taiko
purplepenguin got me is a lot easier to lug from camp. Despite having no time for warm-up (court and dinner having run late), it went well, and I have to say it was pretty cool playing by torchlight under a half moon.
We had to share the site with a local rodeo. I answered questions for a couple of young women who wandered over to see what was going on. Luckily, Helga happened to wander by, provided them with info about our equestrian activities and contact info: turns out she and they are local to each other, so we could have a couple new folks.
AND I got some very nice pictures of the Page School and the blacksmith's challenge.

Oh, and for
sasha_khan , I met, got to hold and receive a kiss from an absolutely charming and well mannered African grey parrot named Annie.
