Work has been bonkers lately. My counterpart leaves on vacation Thursday and I am not looking forward to crunching payroll on the Tuesday after the 4th of July holiday. It'll get done somehow.

Managed not to do anything stupid in taiko tonight. Taped my right foot with an elastic bandage that's supposed to stick to itself (and doesn't, quite), and threw a brace on my left knee. Just enough to make me mindful of them being on, therefore, just enough to keep me from flexing them in directions they should not go.  (Have I mentioned that I am a clutz?) Don't quite have this new drill down yet. I know that if I try to do too many new things at once none of them stick, so tonight it was screw form, just hit the drums and keep moving through the damn pattern even if I'm screwing up the turns because there's people in front of and behind me that need to keep moving too. Yes, Sensei, I think too much. I can't change that. It'll get there.

Started Tanegashima at lunchtime and finished the first chapter, which discusses the arrival of Portuguese traders on the island named in the title, comparing a variety of Japanese and European sources. It's a monograph from the Nordic Institute of Asian Studies at the University of Copenhagen (yes, really!), in English. So far, pretty interesting. However, I can see I'm probably going to have to get my hands on The Travels of Mendes Pinto at some point.
