Economic stimulus and laundry
Dec. 4th, 2010 04:19 pmI have managed to get all but three if the gifts that need to be shipped back east for family this morning, (those being my brother-in-law and two nephews). I have managed to do it by supporting local businesses and artisans. And, yes, I gave myself a couple birthday presents into the bargain.
I can never remember which is the Berkeley Potter's Guild and the Berkeley Potter's Studio, especially since they're only a couple blocks apart, however, they were both open by 10 AM. I acquired two pieces by Danny Dastrup - a tea bowl as a Twelfth Night gift for G, which isn't remotely purple, but is instead brown with reddish streaks in a very Japanese style. I also bought what I can only describe as a coffee mug with the soul of a tea bowl - glorious orangy Shino-ware glaze, spiral rib going around the outside and a delicate spiral inside, complete with mug handle. Better yet, Mr. Dastrup was working the till at the front of the studio. The two pieces I bought went for $20 less together than one of the tea bowls he had for sale last year.
I also found a couple pieces at the Potter's Studio by two of their artists, a crackle glazed votive holder with five-pointed star cutouts for my Mom, and an abstract, asymmetrical plate for Dad.
The girls got sweaters from Nomadic Traders, this odd little shop over on Camellia that's only open a couple weekends a year. I can't touch their alpaca offerings on my budget, but they had good sale prices on their other patterned sweaters, enough so that I got one for myself.
Alex and the boys are a little harder. May have to give Miriam a call, fend of the "They have enough already!" argument and try to get a clue.
And now, laundry!
