Sound and fury, signifying what?
Feb. 5th, 2011 12:08 pmDoes no one read signatures appended to posts anymore? Not one, but TWO people just addressed me as "Jon" on SCA-Waste in response to posts I SIGNED. They had to parse the Jon out of my current email ID which reads "LJonthebay." Go on. Read that out loud. I'll wait. There are words in there. It makes sense. Honest it does. The newbie doesn't know me, fine, and I absolutely get that most people can't determine gender, much less which is the personal name with Japanese monikers, but the second responder does know me! By both my SCA names.
Why yes, I have been cranky of late. It's a cocktail of an on-and-off earache/headaches, hot flashes, and a bout of indigestion on Thursday night that resulted in no sleep. After all the hoo hah from the Entitled Old Timers on SCA Waste, no one else has come forward and said, "Hey, BTW, I took pictures at that event too and you can see them at __________." Well, there was the other Facebooker who shot 20 or 30 grainy, blurry shots from the back of the hall with his cell phone. That ghostly figure next to the blinding white light beyond the open door is not proof of an afterlife. It's just me in oshiroi standing next to the fire exit. I think. I can't be sure because the photos are rather wretched.
Met
layla_lilah for dinner last night at Angeline's. It's hip, it's trendy, it's been on Check Please Bay Area and all the local rags as a great place to eat, and it's a madhouse, but we had reservations. I had the crawfish etouffee over rice with parmesan string beans, she had fried chicken, gravy and mashed sweet potatoes. I can take or leave deep fried anything, but we traded tastes. Everything was yummy. Dessert was a decadent chocolate pot de creme with bourbon-laced whipped cream that had never seen a can, and my compatriot opted for the Bananas Foster bread pudding.
From there, we marched up the hill to see Kodo at Zellerbach Hall. It's really, really hard to sit still in a concert seat for taiko. REALLY HARD. And they were on their game last night. The blazing hand speed and subtletly of "Monochrome, " (all on shime-daiko except for one man in the shadows occasionally striking a gong) was evocative of a rainstorm, and of course, the O-daiko piece was as showy and dramatic as expected, even from our spot near the back of the orchestra. Really wonderful, though I've got the fue (flute) riff from one number (Irodori?) stuck in my head. Here's the one that makes my knees hurt: "Miyake."
Just dug through and reorganized the contents of the back of the truck. Found a spot for the new folding wagon and the two new folding stools I ordered from Blockade Runner. (I like having them for the sake parties. Not everyone can or should sit on the ground. That brings me to five.) Put new batteries on all the tap lights and recovered them with orange paper - they work great in the basket lanterns and are not a fire hazard. Brought George in - he looks tatty and needs a new coif, and probably a new tunic too. I think I have some red scraps left from JAF's hitatare I can use for one.
EDIT: George has a new hat. Tunic is gonna wait - while the old one is a bit sun faded, it's not awful and getting it off and on over is big ol' stuffed noggin is a pain.Anyone remember the West Kingdom Populace Hinomaru? I Succumbed To The Dark Side and printed out iron-ons to use as tent rope flags.
sengokudaimyo can help me clean up the 'sploded Brains of Hidebound Western Oldtimers. Speaking of which, this printer/scanner is an ink hog - and does such irritating things as refusing to scan when there's no ink or paper loaded - even if you just want to create a jpg and not print it. Not urgent enough to replace immediately, but it's a pain in my backside.
layla_lilah and I are going to catch "The King's Speech in a little bit...."
