Home sweet home
Jun. 23rd, 2011 08:22 pmBecause I'm in the mood for a meme.....
What type of home do you live in (house, mobile home, apartment...)
I live in a 100+ year old house that was split into four apartments. My landlord is a prince among men who single-handedly renovated all the units in the house from electrical to laying carpeting and promptly shows up if something needs fixing. My fellow tenants are all likewise excelleng neighbors.
Is your home all on one level or is it a 2 story home?
The house totals three stories. Two tenants live in units downstairs, one has half of the second floor. My living room, kitchen and bath are on the other part of the second floor and I have the finished 3rd floor as bedroom/study. (Plus attic access!)
Do you consider your home to be "in the country" or "in the city"
City. That said, my city has a very small town feel to it.
What is the most dominant color throughout your home?
I rent, therefore, the walls are off-white, all woodwork is either painted or stained dark brown (e.g., stair railings and ceiling beams in the living room), living room, stairs and bedroom are carpeted in a light brown.
What is on the front of your fridge right now?
Various magnets, photos of my nephews, postcards, a DC Metro fare card with Barack Obama's picture on it (from my trip back east just before his inauguration in 2009), a street map of My Island and a white board with frequently called numbers on it.
What is one of the oldest items in your home?
Probably those ceiling beams. Though I do have some jewelry that belonged to my grandmother that may predate the existence of this house, including a locket with photos of my great grandparents inside. Oldest book in the house dates to 1901, an excruciatingly quaint curiosity titled Japanese Plays and Playfellows by Osman Edwards.
Whether big or small..what was the last item you purchased for your home?
Do new scrubbies for the kitchen sink count?
What is your favorite spot in your home?
(Least favorite - the shower. This place does not have a tub and there are times I really, REALLY miss having one.) Most favorite, the garret - whether chilling out at my desk beneath the skylight or waking up to the sound of rain on the roof.
What was your favorite thing about this home when you first looked at it?
They were in the final stages of renovating the unit when I came to look at it - the place reeked of paint and they were pitching carpet out the front window of the other 2nd floor unit onto the front lawn. My (future) landlord, greeted me, told me to feel free to look around but watch where I stepped as they had just grouted the tile in the bathroom and kitchen floors. I walked into the kitchen, looked to my right and squeed "OMG, you have a WEDGEWOOD!" I suspect my reaction to the late 1940's vintage gas range may have clinched my getting this place.
If money was no object what is the one thing you would change in your home?
Maybe buy something of my own in this part of town. There's a funky little place on the historic register about four blocks away that needs some lovin' if someone would just buy it and not gut its soul by modernizing it too much.
How many chairs at your dining table?
I don't HAVE a dining table.
What color(s) are the sheets on your bed?
Pale green at the moment.
Do you have a "junk drawer"? Where?
Kitchen.
What is the first room you walk into from your front door?
Living room.
How many bedrooms do you have?
One.
Is there a fuzzy cover on the lid of any toilet in your home?
HELL NO.
How far do you have to drive to get to the nearest Wal Mart?
Walmart? Stupid meme. How about 2 miles to the city beach? Less than a mile to the grocery store, movie palace, dentist's office?
Favorite piece of furniture in your home?
It's a tie between my funky bentwood rocking chair in the living room (James' favorite place to sit when he's around) and the kiri tansu in the bedroom.
What would you call your decorating "style" ?
Early Garage Sale. "Eclectic" just doesn't quite cover it.
