You have no idea. There's a sea battle at Dan No Ura in the 1190s between factions supporting two different lines of succession. Their army destroyed, their boats being overrun by the enemy, the Emperor's grandmother takes the toddler in her arms, says they will go to a better world, the child prays and she jumps into the sea with him. Most of the court follow and drown - tragically, the boy Emperor's mother is fished from the sea by the enemy. This episode is commemorated in the Tale of the Heike. I did an LJ post on it at one point and will try to find it for you if I can.
