Yeah, those are the best kind of hardware stores. Fortunately we've got one too as well as a couple of semi-specialized places that sell to the general public as well as the contractors. OTOH, I needed about a dozen C-clamps, so Harbor Freight was a good deal. I was thinking about your lantern handle--what about a long cord so the lantern could hang from a pole?
