Kevin McKidd got a lot of notice in the U.S. for his work in the HBO miniseries "Rome" as the fierce, tormented Lucius Vorenus. In Mike Leigh's "Topsy Turvy," a brilliant film about the creation of Gilbert & Sullivan's "Mikado, he plays tenor Durward Lelly. This scene always makes me chuckle. With Jim Broadbent as W.S. Gilbert, Jonathan Aris as put-upon costume designer Mr. Wilhelm, and Martin Savage as top hatted George Grosmith. Feel free to giggle at Wilhelm's claim that the costumes were researched and authentic in every detail, 'cause I've never seen a haori with smoking jacket lapels, or kimono with piping on 'em.

I love "The Mikado" -- so it's only natural that I adore "Topsy Turvy." (The fact that I have a big warm fuzzy crush on Shirley Henderson is totally beside the point.) For those who want more information on those folks, most of them actually have somewhat lengthy bios on Wikipedia, having been incredibly famous actors in their day. (How many folks know that Mr. D'Oyly Carte, the power behind the theatre productions, was also the owner and creator of the Savoy and the Ritz? The man was a Trump ahead of his time.)

I have to add (and this is YOUR fault!) that I am now re(rerererere)watching "Topsy-Turvy."

God, but I love this movie. I love the line of Helen Lenoir (the future second Mrs. D'Oyly Carte) when the two actors are overcome with food poisoning: "The more I see of men, the more I admire dogs."
