As I turn for home
I see it, sneaking up on
Mount Tam and the bay.
The distant hills seem as a
Tsunami of curling fog.

(Shot this last summer, but it's a common phenomenon out here.)

What a beautiful view! I wish I lived near the sea. ;_;

That "wave" is fog pouring over the hills on the opposite side of the San Francisco Bay. Yeah, I do like living near the water.

How often does it happen and what;s the best time and place to see this view?

Late afternoon any time the marine layer decides to waterfall itself over the hills across the bay. I was on the beach in Alameda. If you pull up a map, Shoreline Drive runs along the bay. I was somewhere between Park Street and Grand Street on the beach side. The bit of land jutting out at the left is the edge of Bay Farm Island.
