Posted Monday to my kingdom's e-list:

"Risen yeast is cast
Into the purest waters
Pearls of rice entombed
Ten days in darkness dwelling
Strain jollity for one's cup.

Take your ease, o friend,
Among bright lanterns and taste
Nihon's true delights.
In harmony we gather
To celebrate the harvest.

In the spirit of harmony, this person humbly wishes to invite you to
the House Of Cheerful Monkeys for a sake tasting on Saturday evening
of Mists Coronet. Green tea will also be served to those who prefer
not to imbibe. Poets and tellers of tales most welcome!"

Our story so far: Some of you will recall that several months ago, a newcomer to our Fair Society was driven away in silence by what turned into a four day electronic public stoning of Japanese personae in the SCA, to my disgust and irritation. Not long after, the main perpetrator won the Coronet of the Mists by right of arms.

Giri has required me to remind His Highness that at least one of His populace is proud to be Nihonjin as often as possible. I have to say he has been a good sport about the whole thing.

Anyway, I've been planning this little do for some time. Today I ran up to El Cerrito to the Ranch 99 Market.  It's never NOT busy, but at least hitting the freeway early on a Sunday morning made getting there a lot easier. Given that Their Highnesses have planned many, many, MANY activities to engage, tire and stupefy Their Populace, I expect that my little gathering will (a) have a very light turnout and (b) people will be more likely to partake of a dessert course with their potables than want an actual meal. One of my friends has Asian pear trees in his yard and I have scored several lovely ones which shall be served sliced and arranged into seasonal chrysanthemum shapes.

A visit to the Ranch 99 Market in El Cerrito has yielded candied chestnuts, dorayaki (a sort of pancake pastry with a sweet bean filling), some lovely manju pastries in the shape of maple leaves, Choya plum wine intriguingly packaged in single serving jars* and two bottles of sake that will be as new to me as they will be to my guests. *I am not a plum wine afficionado, but I am told that Choya is one of the better ones. Should it convince me sufficiently, I will invest in one of the larger bottles with plums floating in the bottom. I also got a nice girly-fruity-drinkin' Moonstone Asian Pear sake at BevMo. [profile] mamapduck has had that one and it's a nice introduction-sake for people who have never had it.

Why The House of Cheerful Monkeys? Well, I figured if the name had monkeys in it, folks would know it was me.  I also have a lovely hanging scroll with a mother and baby snow monkey that will be displayed.
Cheerful Monkeys will also be open to entertain guests Friday night of Great Western War and quite possibly at Estrella if it proves workable.

This is being posted while I am letting my fingers recover from punching holes for the hiogi. I've got about half the slats pierced at this point. Again, this project is going into the A & S competition as part of my obligation to educate His Highness and His Subjects about the arts and culture of Japan.
EDIT: Holes are punched. My fingers feel like hamburger. May try to lace it together in a bit. Need to do some sanding, but I appear to be out of sandpaper and don't feel like diving out to the store right now to get some because I'm still a bit beat from the ECW trip yesterday.

I wish we lived closer so that I could attend... You must let me know when you are coming to the Right Coast (Maryland area) next so that we can meet - lunch, my treat!
