OK, yes, Northern California is getting a hardcore storm. Yes, one has to actually walk about 25 unsheltered yards from the shop to the main building, but GEEZ, people, you're in the construction business! Dress for the conditions and quit acting like you're going to melt. Stop milling around inside the front door acting like you've never seen water fall from the sky before. If you must mill around inside the door waiting for a lull, fine, just do it quietly. You're standing in an echo chamber less than ten feet from my desk. Oh, and SHUT the bloody door behind you instead of leaving it to swing in the gale.

It's a good thing I knew you'd all do this - I'm in a big woolly sweater, jeans, four wheel drive for feet (rubber soled clogs) and wool socks.

Why are people acting surprised that bridges are being closed due to high winds? Why are they shocked that semis are jack-knifing all over creation? Why are they trying to drive like the roads are dry and visibility is normal?

These people would die in the Midwest or the Northeast, where frozen water falls from the sky.

What does it say about me, that I heard about the big NY storm my sisters in Michigan got, and I'm actually PEEVED that it's going to be in the 50's here next week?

I miss snow. I miss snow storms that actually dump more than 1/2 an inch of snow. (This is a major winter event? Puh--leeze.)

You, well, you're perverse.

I don't miss having to shovel it, that's for sure. And I could've done without that fall on black ice several years ago when I dinged my right elbow.

Thanks, I'll take that as a compliment!

I dented my dignity on snowy streets more than once. And I could do without the ice storms.

But I haven't seen a good rip-roaring blizzard in SOO long. As long as the heat stays on, I'm good.

Hmph.

I will admit to some trepidation regarding what I'll find when I get home. Power went out according to [livejournal.com profile] bovil around 10:30 and hasn't been restored yet.

And, he also said, the storm drain for the cul-de-sac at in front of our place was backing up. The townhouse is 3-4 feet above grade, so I'm not so worried about it flooding, but it's going to make it bloody difficult to load the car this evening if there's a lake in front of the driveway.

Take care, you guys. It seems to have settled down a bit up here (San Leandro) for the moment, so hopefully your drains will have a chance to catch up with the flow soon.

That said, I am parking on the corner by the side of the house and getting as wet as needs be when I get home. The maple tree in front of the house has already dropped a branch on my truck once.

One of the professors here asked me if it was wet enough for me (I took light rail rather than braving the winds on my motorcycle). I'll take monsoon over blizzard any day.

Sounds like the NYC drivers who can't handle anything falling from the sky ever, regardless of temperature. OTOH, one couple here hails from Colorado, where they only cancel school if it's actually blizzarding so hard that the plows can't get out. I guess it's all down to knowing how to cope and/or learning...
