Maybe because he was an extraordinary person who honestly made the world a better place? Not because he climbed a mountain, but because he then used that celebrity to improve the lot of others, especially in the country of Nepal.
I just read the news story about his death. He seems to have been a truly decent man. We all should be sad when a decent person is lost. I was really touched by him wanting his ashes scattered on the bay "to wash up on the shores where I lived my life". For some reason that bit really got to me.
