Looks like I will be babysitting introducing a newcomer to the SCA this weekend. Already on the schedule of lessons for this week (based on emails exchanged to date) will be naming practices, titles, clothing, portraying a member of a minority culture in our game.

She has already asked if her "midevil" garb will be OK to wear. I'm wearing Japanese so (a) she can recognize me and (b) because it's been very hot the last couple of days.

She signed herself "lady ****** of the *****."  I expect to explain the nature of the Award of Arms, titles, and how to address people. I also expect to explain that just because you think a name is cute or funny now, doesn't mean (a) it bears any resemblance to historical practice and (b) you won't be sick of it a year down the road.

She wrote "I am going maily to talk with you." I am going to introduce her to a lot of nice people - because the SCA is about being social.

This is the lady whose email in search of the SCA's "Pre-Edo Court" was forwarded to me by the folks at Costume Con. She's completely unfamiliar with our game. I hope to fix that. ;-D

I had this mental image of you as 'SCA Cheerleader' - only in full whiteface makeup and Japanese gear, which is very incongruous!
