Spent the morning huddled on the sofa nursing a headache that doesn't want to quit. Managed to catch some show jumping coverage on the Olympics. McLain Ward put in a clean trip for the US on a tricky course and it's always nice to see Canada's Ian Millar still out there doing his thing. Laura Kraut's four legged partner Cedric is a gazelle in a horse costume and just plain FUN to watch. Also saw the tail end of the men's sabre. I confess it looks a bit silly to my SCA-jaded eye in silver hazmat suits with blinky lights, knee breeches and sneakers, but the USA made the French work for that gold medal, so that was pretty cool.

Did anyone catch the finish of the women's marathon yesterday? Frankly, marathon does not sound like my idea of a good way to spend a day, but Romanian Constantina Tomescu loped into the stadium so far ahead of the rest of the race she made it look, well, not easy, but pretty darn joyous. Britain's Paula Radcliffe was a study in pain, you could see that every stride hurt like hell, but kudos for her for finishing.

Have painted out the gold waves from yesterday with black and am waiting for that to dry so I can try again with the new paint. I have painted over gold work on this damn box five times now because of the suck that is Brush'n'Leaf. So frustrated I could scream. But that would hurt right now.

On the book front, I got about halfway through Capote's Breakfast At Tiffany's and didn't bother to finish it. It's just not holding my interest. I'm making good headway through  Arthur Herman's  To Rule The Waves: How The British Navy Shaped The Modern World and it's quite interesting. For my SCA peeps, a goodly chunk of it is devoted to what passed for a navy in the England of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I and English trade and interaction with the sea powers of that period (Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands). I've just gotten through the bit on the Bounty expedition and mutiny and expect to be hobnobbing with Horatio Nelson and his contemporaries in short order. If I have a beef with it, there should be more maps, and illustrative plates of people and ships of note would have been nice to have.

EDIT.3:30 PM. This crap is even WORSE than the Brush'n'Leaf, which I did not believe was possible. I want to cry.

I'm not painting another stroke on this damn box today. I can't. I'll only fuck it up and have to paint it out AGAIN.

It was a great run. Everyone was hanging back and never challenged her at all. I think the toughest thing for her was that she was running a single person race but really didn't know how far ahead she was.
