If your daughter is " very passionate about all things Japanese," taking nihon buyo (traditional dance lessons), koto lessons and has already entered at least one kingdom level A&S event I have just one question.

Why didn't your daughter write to me?

Parents do their children no favor by doing their homework for them.

Depending on age of said daughter, she may not be allowed direct access to the net or email yet.

Just a thought.

No brainer: this is when Mom should sit next to the desk and supervise said contact, just as Mom was on one extension and daughter was on the other when daughter conducted a phone interview with me about the SCA for a school project.

maybe she's not allowed to talk to strangers on the internet? (I have no idea how old said daughter is, but parents are always given dire warnings about letting your child anywhere near the internet, because it's such a bad evil place.)

You could write back with a warm, cheerful "Sure! I'd be glad to help, tell her to write to me."

Although with some parents, that's too subtle a hint....

Or maybe mom was testing the waters. Many people do not care for children. If my kids are interested in something they do, I always check first to make sure that they won't be completely rejected just because they are kids. Those types of people don't want to be disturbed. And I'm not subjecting my kids to that kind of rejection merely because they are age challenged. Enthusiasm can be wearing, or so people have reminded me.

WE know you aren't like that. Goodness knows you have been many times kind to my boys. But without that experience of knowing you personally, I would have been a lot more cautious.

And double Gianetta's comment - which I was also going to make, but she beat me to it.

P.S. I'm hoping that Aidan will stay at Purg long enough to come with me to your party (maybe this time I can stay longer without him falling asleep)

This. There are enough people in the SCA who indulge in hate speech and general nastiness against kids that I would not have Brian write the introductory email to a stranger. I *would* ask the stranger if she would mind Brian writing to her, but I would definitely make the first move.

in other news....I was approached by a rapier fighter at practice yesterday who would really like to switch to japanese - Heian specifically (he said something to Li about how Heian is the birth of the Samurai, so he wanted to be that. Li tried to talk him into doing 14th century instead...haha). He approached me asking about where to get good silks, and I gave him a few good sources that I've used. BUT, I begged him to get on Tousando and start talking to people who really know what they're doing before he starts anything.

Right now, he's fighting rapier in a Japanese firefighter coat.

I just sent him a brief list of links (mostly fabric related), including a link to your site and the tousando.

sweet kid, been playing SCA for quite a few years, and I know he's seen a lot of good looking Asians and really wants to be THAT. (and by THAT, I don't mean Han)

:)
