"Jesu Cristes milde moder
Stud, biheld hire sone o rode
That he was ipined on.
The sone heng, the moder stud
And biheld hire childes blud,
Wu it of hise wundes ran." - Anonymous, 13th century.
No $30 million budget, no Aramaic and Latin subtitles, no media hype.
2.
"There's a picture opposite me
Of my primitive ancestry
Which stood on rocky shores and kept the beaches shipwreck free
Though I respect that a lot
I'd be fired if that were my job
After killing Jason off and countless screaming Argonauts" - "Birdhouse In Your Soul," They Might Be Giants
It's the screaming Argonauts, you know it is.
3.
"A cigarette that bears a lipsticks traces
An airline ticket to romantic places
And still my heart has wings
These foolish things remind me of you
A tinkling piano in the next apartment
Those stumbling words that told you what my heart meant
A fairgrounds painted swings
These foolish things remind me of you. " - "These Foolish Things," Holt Marvell (music by Jack Strachey and Harry Link)
Time travel is possible. A couple of weeks ago I was on the pier behind the Ferry Building with my tea and cookie and Don Cunningham broke into These Foolish Things on his clarinet:
An unfiltered Chesterfield in a black plastic ashtray does battle with cinnamon and nutmeg as we sit in chairs viny with wrought iron ivy at a pink marble formica table peeling apples for pie. From the living room comes the sound of a piano. I miss you, Gramma. I miss you, Grampop.
4. "The sun, whose rays
Are all ablaze
With ever-living glory,
Does not deny
His majesty
He scorns to tell a story!
He don't exclaim,
"I blush for shame,
So kindly be indulgent."
But, fierce and bold,
In fiery gold,
He glories all effulgent!
I mean to rule the earth,
As he the sky
We really know our worth,
The sun and I!
I mean to rule the earth,
As he the sky
We really know our worth,
The sun and I!
Observe his flame,
That placid dame,
The moon's Celestial Highness;
There's not a trace
Upon her face
Of diffidence or shyness:
She borrows light
That, through the night,
Mankind may all acclaim her!
And, truth to tell,
She lights up well,
So I, for one, don't blame her!
Ah, pray make no mistake,
We are not shy;
We're very wide awake,
The moon and I!
Ah, pray make no mistake,
We are not shy;
We're very wide awake,
The moon and I!" - W.S. Gilbert, The Mikado, music by Arthur Sullivan
I fell back in love with this one this week while listening to The Mikado. It would've been too easy to choose something like "I've Got A Little List." There's a particular resonance when one has fought a lifelong battle with shyness that most people don't even know is being waged even today.
5. "The stars are blazing like rebel diamonds cut out of the sun
When you read my mind" - The Killers "Read My Mind."
It's been getting a lot of airplay on KFog and I like some of the images in it, particularly this one.
