The Choju Giga (scenes of frolicking animals) dates from the late Heian period and depicts animals pretending to be humans.
The Choju Giga consists of four scrolls which inevitably seem to be split up and exhibited in separate places. http://www.kokingumi.com/ChojuGiga/index.html is a modern "rendition" of the scroll. I prefer the original images that I've seen, but it gives an idea of what the whole thing would've been like.
