You decide....

Tobi (construction worker) pants.

Tattsuke-bakama. A form of hakama with built-in kyahan (gaiters) that became popular for military wear in the late 16th century.

Photo shamelessly ganked from www.sengokudaimyo.com - Sensei won't mind. Much.

I blame [personal profile] bovil and [personal profile] kproche. Ever since they showed me this article I've thought I'd love a pair of tobi pants for casual wear. They look comfortable and kinda fun.

Then the lightbulb went on. I knew how to do it. Tattsuke-bakama. Take the Sengoku-daimyo hakama pattern.  Make it shin length and close up the side seams instead of leaving classic hakama "doorknob catchers" so I can actually wear it with t-shirts and such. Sew a solid waist tie to the back half, possibly turning it into a drawstring closure in the front so they can be easily pulled on and off. Make a pair of slip-on kyahan based on the calf-to-ankle measurement of a pair of my narrow legged jeans. Pleat bottom of hakama into top of kyahan.

Awhile ago someone I know was cleaning out her house and gave me some kimono that will never fit me in a million years. One was a yukata made of a nice indigo/white kasuri. I took it apart the other night and while there is no way I could ever have worn it as a yukata, there's definitely enough to get a pair of these out of.

EDIT for Takadai-hime:
Because a picture is worth, you know:

Obata Genjirou Torashi-dono in hakama - straight hems all the way to the ankle. (Yes, ladies, the picture does not do him justice. He's a fine figure of samurai manhood and a hell of a nice guy.)

Takeda-dono in sashinuki - these are very long hakama with a drawstring at the bottom hem. By tying the drawstring, the hem forms a pouf, sort of like harem pants. (Ditto on the fine figure of samurai manhood and a hell of a nice guy bit.)

Overslept.

Noticed water was not actually falling from the sky for the first time in days.  Threw on clothes. Took Blanche down to the 76 Station on Webster only to discover they stopped doing smog tests three months ago.

Came home. Consulted phone book.

Drove BACK across Alameda and into Oakland Chinatown to the 76 Station at 8th and Harrison instead. Waited my turn to get smogged while wondering if the tow truck that came to pick up the lady in the Mercedes with the flat tire was going to take me out (because while the 76 station sells overpriced gas and does smog tests, it could not fix this woman's flat). The good news? Blanche passed.

Drove back into Alameda, stopped at the ATM at Marina Village only to discover that it did not like the taste of the check I was trying to deposit. Perhaps it was all that black ink and Anakin Skywalker's pouting face on the front. Four tries and no go. That branch does not have Saturday teller hours and I didn't have a deposit slip on me either.  Cell phone rings in the middle of it. Can't hear first three words out of caller's mouth because of passing cars and ranty homeless guy on nearby bench. The good news? It was an invite from  [profile] mamapduck to come hang out - just too darn busy today to take her up on it!

Came home. Picked up checkbook just in case!

Drove down to the bank at The Ninth Circle of Hell - South Shore Center. In the two years I've lived on Alameda, South Shore is STILL undergoing heavy construction 60% of the stores are empty and yet parking is completely inadequate.  The good news? The ATM ate Scowling Anakin just fine and I didn't have to stand in line.

More good news, a completely disarming post from one of the Hatless Bushi of the Tousando about how psyched he is about going to his first Estrella all the way from Nova Scotia and can he bring us anything? I am looking forward to meeting Sakurai-dono. Oh, and he's camping with the East's royalty and I just remembered that Ice is king right now.

And now, I must go back downstairs and outside because I just realized I left the smog paperwork in the truck and I need it to pay DMV for my registration!
