I have caller ID so I can screen my calls because I live alone. I've also subscribed to the national "Do Not Call" list for telemarketers.

For the last few weeks I have been getting calls from the same 800 number and not answering. I realized when I was home for any length of time that this number would ring my phone approximately once an hour over a several hour span, hit the answering machine message and hang up without leaving a message.

The other night I got sufficiently irritated/curious to pick up. I said "Hello" several times to dead air and hung up. When the phone rang again about an hour later, I picked up, said "Hello" again several times and finally got a heavily accented human voice asking, "Does anyone there spik Espanish?" "No," I said. "I believe you have the wrong number, please stop calling here."

The number continues to pop up on my home phone. I got a "Buenas Tardes" yesterday at 8 PM, which, in my book qualifies as "noches," not "tardes."  I repeated  to the caller that  there were no Spanish speakers here and asked who was calling. He hung up without identifying himself.  When I dial the number that comes up on the caller id, I get the phone company recording telling me that the number is not in service.
I've made a point of memorizing "Me gustarĂa hablar con su supervisor" for the next round.

Which brings me to LiveJournal. If you're going to post comments to my journal on anything other than "Writers Block" entries, kindly have the courtesy to introduce yourself.

Now please get your virtual feet off my virtual coffee table.
