Pleasing things
Oct. 15th, 2008 11:50 amPleasing things:
Cloth adhesive tape worked like a charm and I did not aggravate the spot where last week's taiko blister continues to heal.
Despite not having played it since June (and that only twice) I made it through "Jishin" last night - including a mangled improv solo on the o-daiko. (Distressing thing: I don't know what I'm going to do with myself between November 19 and January 6th, which is when the second winter session starts!)
I have tickets for two taiko concerts in the next two months. (Crap! I forgot to mail
didjiman 's check - I SWEAR it will go in the mail tomorrow!)
I expect to have house guests from out of state for the second one, namely
purplepenguin and his lovely lady.
I have zero commitments to be at an SCA event until Estrella War. I do not have to make something for Twelfth Night. I do not have to teach a Christmas Carol class that nobody will attend. I do not have to attendoccasions of sin feast events that sabotage my eating habits. I can go to what I want - or not. Down-time projects to be contemplated include more shibori experiments, updates to my website, designing and building some Japanese camp lanterns with the fiberglass "paper" I got at Tap Plastics last week and the annual triage of my camping gear.

Oct. 15th, 2008 06:29 pmBecause three sale-priced long sleeved cotton tops at Eddie Bauer were necessary to my getting through work at winter without looking like a bag lady and because I could not rationalize throwing money at some of my favorite talented people this past weekend instead, The Curmudgeon brings you......
Beautiful things:
The Memento Mori paternoster I mentioned in a previous post, can be admired here
http://www.the-treasury.biz/SCA.htm. The rosewood paternoster sucketh not either, having a marvelous tactile quality. The artisan is Mistress Eirny Thorvaldsdottir, late of the West, currently of Atenveldt, and yes, she will be at Estrella War.
It's a ring! It's a toy! It's a scientific instrument! Our very own
acanthusleaf now has nifty armillary sphere rings. http://www.medievaljeweler.com/rings.html Anybody on my f-list who is planning on doing the Steampunk Con thing in San Jose Halloween weekend should check them out. Her medieval reproductions and SCA award regalia are top notch too.
If Cok Guzel (which, they tell me, is Turkish for Beautiful Things) had a website, I'd put 'em up. I freely admit scanty knowledge on their niche, but they had damn nice jewelry, tesbih (Islamic prayer beads) and fabrics for Near Eastern applications.
I have a weakness for pottery. I own more pottery than I can possibly drink from or eat off of. Raku Raku Tei is Japanese, but she makes awesome medieval European reproductions. Be sure to go ogle her commissions page. I plan on adding something from RRT to my collection as soon as I can.

kproche : When you see this, quote Blackadder in your LJ.
"To you, Baldrick, the Renaissance was just something that happened to other people, wasn't it?"
