Done, doing, to be done
Jan. 31st, 2009 03:35 pmYesterday a man I had only ever dealt with via e-mail had his last day working for my company. The good news is he's going on to another job. The bad news is I missed meeting him in person. I returned from my morning break to find a pink rose laid across my keyboard. He'd also given roses to Nancy and Grace.
The flip side of the coin occurred several hours later. It was some time after 3:30 during the dead zone that tends to be my Friday afternoon. I'd fielded a few calls from workers' wives (the ones who manage their husbands' money, obviously) asking when the 2008 W-2s were being mailed. The phone rings. This man introduces himself by name, announces he's a member of Local 104 and says he wants to know about the job we're hiring for. I tell him - as I have been instructed to do by my Superintendent - we're in the middle of a hiring freeze, and that his best option is to sign in at his union hall because we go to the halls when we DO want to hire. "Can you tell me where the jobsite is?" he asks as if he hasn't heard a word I've said. "No," I say. "I'm sorry, I can't." For one thing there isn't one, as far as I'm aware. For another, if there was, I wouldn't tell you so you can show up and pester a foreman who's trying to get his own damn work done. 'Well," he huffs. "Thanks - for nothing." I wrote his name down. I will give it to my superintendent on Monday - and report the guy's attitude problem. Do NOT mess with the office staff. Ever.
The taiko drum building project has been added to my website.
The back of the truck has been straightened out and semi-repacked, in preparation for the final pack-out to Estrella. I should have room for the drums. I think. I hope.
The ground cloth that never dried out from October Crown has been thrown away and a new one acquired at OSH.
Poplar dowels for new bachi have been acquired at OSH. I bought two dowels, figuring I'll keep two pairs and donate the third to the class.
Silk broadcloth has been cut out and partially assembled into a kosode. I have an idea involving mokume shibori that I want to try and partial assembly helps me when I'm laying out the decorative elements on a piece.
My feeble attempt to schill for the arts at Estrella on SCA-Waste has been met with a resounding silence, which is about what I expected.
No wonder I'm hungry.....
