Stimulatin' the old economy
Sep. 11th, 2010 04:44 pmThe Beanery: one medium chai latte.
Feel Good Bakery: onecrack pumpkin muffin. (You would think dark chocolate chunks and pumpkin wouldn't go together but, crack I tell you.)
Marshall's: one cotton mock turtleneck, light purple.
One pair black tights with white polka dots which have definite Mod Potential.
(No skirts in my size. At all.)
Ross: one pair Rockport loafers, black patent. Mod Potential. (I am a difficult fit. I will not buy vintage shoes over the internet, no matter how tempting those red and white pumps were. These loafers have a square-ish toe, cover the instep like they're supposed to - what IS it with these dumb-ass, toe-cleavage flats that are out these days - and the patent leather and metal hardware are attractive, and they FIT.)
One plaid Jansport backpack, because the one someone gave me when she was cleaning out her house a couple of years ago has developed the annoying habit of fraying along the inner seams and the threads getting stuck in the zippers. On the other hand, jammed zippers mean they don't fall open at inopportune moments either. Said backpack carries an REI label and given that chain's MO, I'm certain it was overpriced when new. The replacement is a red, grey and white plaid and all interior seams were finished with tape, unlike the POS from REI.
(No skirts in my size that were not black and ugly.)
Moe's: One copy of Sumi-e by Chiura Obata with a slightly grungy dust cover. (The man only taught at Cal Berkeley, you'd think I'd have found copies of his books there before now!)
One new paperback copy of Stieg Larsson's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo because Dad will not shut up about how great Larsson's novels are and how I should read them in order and he left a copy of The Girl Who Played With Fire at my place last month.
Passed on the copy of Sixties Fashion by Adelheid Rasche because they wanted $43 bucks for it and the text was in German. (Which doesn't mean I didn't leaf through it and have my mind blown, baby. )
Twister's Vintage: It was closed. Maybe they went to the Cal game....
Lest you think I'm completely shallow or oblivious, please click back to my previous entry and read the linked article. On September 12, 2001, I found an email in my inbox time stamped from the wee hours of the morning written by one of my best friends, a former EMT who had gone into the city with his partner to see if they could help. "Don't give in to hate," he wrote, after describing his night.
Oh, and tell the important people in your lives they are important to you while you can. Whether it's terrorists or a ruptured gas main, life is short.
