As beta-test versions go (and yes, I am already contemplating improvements), the koi pond was a success:

For anyone who has to have one:
1 underbed box (this one will hold about 4 gallons of water if you want to float lanterns)
1 sheet of irridescent plastic basket wrap (suitable for both a "dry" or "wet" pond)
3 garlands of plastic craft store vines.
1 box of plastic fake slate flowerbed edging (not wild about it, but I got this idea, what, Tuesday? Wednesday?)
1 ceramic fish, color not found in nature but otherwise quite koi-like in spirit. He may or may not get painted.
Each floating lantern consists of a 4" square of 1/8" balsa wood, a tea light and a piece of paper folded in quarters and held together with transparent tape. So easy it's stupid.
And here's Saru no Hikaru, kickin' back and relaxing in camp before the party.

All in all, it was a pretty mellow weekend.

Got in Friday evening and helped
mamapduck set up her pavilion, got mine up with her help, then she went off in search of the Crown Princess as she's doing the court thing this reign. I then earned myself the undying, if puppylike, allegiance and gratitude of the young man next to us who was struggling to set up an unfamiliar modern tent for a friend in the dark. Seems he'd had a very long, very bad day, had been handed said tent by a young lady who had inherited it from someone else and had herself never tried to set it up. He insisted three times he didn't need help while I was unloading, but the muffled noises of frustration continued, so I said, "At least let me hold the light for you," grabbed the Maglite and began pointing out sleeve poles. Between the two of us we got it figured out and set up.
Somehow I never managed to get to court, except for
misagillian's induction into the Order of the Pelican. I kept being waylaid by friends, which is never a bad thing. Spent a bit of time hanging out with Edward and his boys, talking shop. He finally made it over this morning to look at the sugoroku box . There were some things he'd have done differently - wider splats in the corners, for example, and he recommended a leafing product that sounds signficantly better than what I had. On the whole, he thought it looked pretty good. Coming from him (his Laurel is in wood working), that made me feel a lot better.
Saionji-hime encountered a group of namban eating their weird food next to her camp. The cooked fish was better than it had any right to be. And the peach pie was an enlightenment. But why is their sake PURPLE? And they dress so strangely.
The Cheerful Monkeys party was, well, intimate. Nothing wrong with that and the unopened sake and Choya will come to GWW. As usual, I sorta overdid it on the food too. I can take the manju into work tomorrow and pawn it off there. When things wound down at my place,
momstable and I took the bottle of Moonstone Asian Pear sake on walkabout to some of the other parties. At least four people who were offered sake invoked the name of Master Senkyu. (Again. Because if you say the word "sake", 90% of Westerners will say, "Did you ever meet Master Senkyu." No, I never met the man. Yes, I know he could serve it. And put it away, by all accounts, as well. People forget I've only been in kingdom since 2002.) ALL of them thought the Moonstone was really good. I deliberately use that one as a gateway sake. It's smooth, it's fruity without being too sweet, and it tends to convince people who've never tried sake that it can be worth exploring.
One of the worst things about being in the SCA is staggering out of your tent with Medusa hair and morning breath on your way to (or from) the privy and running into a male friend. One of the best things is neither of them (yes, it happened both mornings) seemed fazed by the horror, and one of them gave me a big hug. Lovely!
I spent about a half hour of Sunday morning sitting in the wet grass with my back to a neighboring camper's dogs tossing bits of cheese behind me. Sorcha and Josephus were camped just behind us with their three dogs, one of which was a rescue case who had been abused. Biscuit decided to go for the cheese and actually got within about two or three feet of me by the time I ran out of cheese. I'm not sure I agreed with her owner's idea of scooping the poor thing up and holding her so I could pet her, but I stayed on the ground, moved slowly, let her sniff my hand and chanted "Good girl," over and over. At least it reduced the amount of barking at me when I was dumping gray water or going to the privy.
Also spent a bit of time packing down/entertaining Gisela's baby, who loved all the interesting things in my area. The cushions to roll on. The lantern stands were particularly attractive, for some reason. The comb. The bag of sesame sticks and wasabi peas - I picked some sesame sticks out for her and put 'em in a teacup. She actually ate more of them than she threw on the ground.
mamapduck and I stopped at the Black Bear before heading home, because I really needed food at that point.

Date: 2008-08-25 05:40 am (UTC)I'm sorry I did not make it back to your camp later on Saturday afternoon. After I had tended to all my "bidniss", I was feeling droopy and decided to leave before it was too dusky to drive the pass (it scares me to drive through there at night for some reason). I'll just have to look forward to the next event we're attending at the same time where I can sample more of your tasty hospitality!
