Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the WTF moment of the week.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081113/ap_on_re_us/obama_catholics

I come from a long, proud, distinguished line of smart mouthed, liberal Democrat votin' Irish Catholics on my mother's side of the family. On behalf of the McGees, Simons, Carlins and Foleys, I say, bite me, Father, for I have sinned. Not.

o.O

Those poor people. I know a lot of people really rely on their churches for support, so it's sad seeing them be placed in that kind of situation and feeling ostracised and uncomfortable at a place where (I assume, anyway) that they'd usually be welcomed.

That they're saying this in regards to Obama is a bit random, imo. When they came out during Kerry's campaign, there was at least a connection bec. Kerry is Catholic himself. But did they make a big stink about Clinton & every other pro-choice Democrat who's been in office? Not really. And Bill Clinton was a lot more firm in expressing is pro-choice stance than Obama has been too re: specifics of language.

I may be wrong, but I think that the authority to make that kind of statement lies with a bishop, not a parish priest. That guy is way out of line.

That dude has his head so far up his fundament he can't begin to remember what daylight looks like.

Mr. One-Issue-Trumps-All: "Let the whole world go to hell with drastic economic crises and wars, etc. - but ya MUST vote for the anti-abortion candidate!!!"

Seeing as he apparently didn't froth like this about previous democrats, from all I've heard, I wonder if he's got a bit of a problem with something else he dare not mention... like possibly the shade of the President-Elect's "tan"...? - Just idle wondering...

Yes - the priest is certainly out of line - that kind of judgement is not applicable and outside of his jurisdiction. I feel like going down there right now to recieve the sacrament, but that would belittle the sacrament.

I'm Catholic to the core, but I am *such* a post-Vatican II Catholic, and I know my church and my theology, and I can go to communion with a clean conscience in this instance.

Phhhhhtt!

Edicts such as this is just one of the reasons I left organized religion, and yes, I was raised as a Catholic. When the opinion of another is the driving force behind my moral compass rather than my making decisions based upon my own conscious, then that becomes thought control and I'm not having any part of it, thankyouverymuch.

And the Church wonders why it can't seem to get a handle on its American parishioners. Sheesh.
