Having houseguests on two back-to-back weekends was darned fun, but it has taken a toll. I woke up around 6 to the clock radio playing "Alice's Restaurant," staggered downstairs to use the bathroom, then came back up, shut off the radio and fell back asleep until after 10.

So far so good. Committed to a day of sloth in my jammies, I went downstairs, turned on the TV and had a bowl of cereal while Andrew Zimmern explored the more exotic foods of Paris. I put on my glasses, intending to read a few more chapters of Thomas Ricks' Fiasco. I got up about six pages in, sensing the onset of a headache, and took an Advil.

It was almost 3 when I woke up. I guess I needed it.

The family called from Annapolis at 4:30, having just finished their dinner.

As I write this, I am debating whether to pop open a Strongbow or pull the cork on that nice Thomas Coyne rose de pinot noir I bought this summer. Strongbow. Definitely the Strongbow. Dry and not too sweet, went beautifully with the meal.

Turkey breast tenderloins with pippin apples, minced garlic, minced ginger and a bottle of Strongbow cider poured over all just went into the oven. (Because I thought I had an onion in the vegetable drawer and it turned out I didn't.) EDIT: This is made completely of WIN! - and I have three breast tenderloins to eat off for the rest of the week. Cider poached the breasts so they were melt-in-your-mouth juicy, the apples made up for my skipping cranberries this year, and I could've gone a lot crazier with the garlic and ginger than I did. I love when a genius idea pays off....

Broccoli and cauliflower with cheese. is chopped and cheese has been grated for a casserole. I'll start the cheese sauce shortly.  Maybe it's weird, but this is my idea of comfort food. Mom makes hers with Cheese Whiz and it's way better than it sounds like it should be. Scratch sauces takes a little longer, but it elevates yum to wow.

NO nasty wet bread with meat grease (happy dance from the UnAmerican Anti-Stuffing Lobby which apparently consists solely of me!)

No taters, since I can happily do did damage to the veggie casserole instead. And of course one of those mutant turkey breasts.

I have some romaine for salad - haven't decided whether I want to bother. Didn't bother. Way too much food without it.

Strawberry rhubarb and/or pumpkin pie, with ice cream. Later. DEFINITELY later.

Even my pared down menu for one manages to look like a lot of food.

Nope--there's at least one other person on my flist who shares that sentiment, so you're not alone :-)

Stuffing is wasted over here, as well.
