Giant cat toys, they are!
Jan. 25th, 2009 12:31 pmOkedodaiko are done - and as soon as my laundry is, I have to run out and get more cordage to rope the three "mini" shime.

And here are the baby shime-daiko. Seeing as the tubing was acquired as a result of an auspicious dumpster dive, I opted to work with the proportions of the tube rather than go with larger drum heads. The finished shime have a height of about 4 1/2" and a head diameter of about 9"
THIS is an awesome website on constructing okedodaiko:

They are light weight. They SOUND like drums. They will endure the extremes of February in Arizona better than a wine barrel with rawhide stretched over it. I built enough drums to teach my class without going broke, and I did it with a hand saw, a pair of utility scissors and a paint brush within the confines of my apartment and the alley outside!
A Certain Person would do well to put that in her critical inkstone and grind it. Contact paper my ass.
I am DAMN proud of my stuff-makin' skills.
