Need a break from the Zen
Feb. 5th, 2009 08:07 pmI cannot sew another stitch tonight.
I have been cranking away on the mokume-shibori project all week. Come home from work, have a snack, sew, eat something vaguely dinner like, sew until bedtime. Yards and yards and yards of running stitch that's ALL going to be torn out after the fabric is dyed.
That said, I've gotten a lot done. I should be able to put in some more work on it tomorrow if I grant myself a break tonight, and maybe even get the sucker dyed Saturday afternoon. I may end up with final construction work on it happening at war (hems, seam finishing, that sort of thing).
I really would like to go to the Noh lecture in San Francisco on Sunday - and maybe fit in a detour to Japantown for some mochi for our sake party. That means doing as much packing as I can on Sunday. The camping stuff is already in the truck, but I still have to deal with the garb trunk, six drums, the hurdy gurdy, the sugoroku board/party box and several clinking bottles of sake.
The lantern building experiments will have to be back burnered. I just haven't had time.
EDIT: Nobody has responded regarding my offer to carry items for the Artisan's Display at Estrella. Whatever. Instead, I stirred some shit on SCA-West. It seems creativity is still the law in the current reign, but only if you're representing a barony. Genius ideas to promote participation in an activity should never be exclusionary.
Note to self: I should probably write up something documentation-like on the sugoroku box at some point.

Date: 2009-02-06 04:53 pm (UTC)I hear mochi is a new years' food. So it's right on time. The article I just read said it's a tradition for someone to sponsor a mochi party (at their opulent house or in a rental hall) and the sponsor owns the mochi pounder for the town and everyone brings their rice and gets it mochified. After a few days when the mochi starts to dry out you're supposed to eat it grilled.
I just read this last night in the ANA (All Nippon Airways) in-flight magazine, which I got at a sponsored film screening of Happy Flight. It's only an okay movie, but still worth seeing for the Japanese and cultural stuff, and also because it's free - ANA is sponsoring it as a promotional opportunity. (Though the near disasters in the movie made me feel more nervous about flying!)
I should mention that I am more than a little in love with ANA since I flew from Chicago to Narita with them. It was so nice. Good food, free alcohol, your own on-demand video. And that was in economy - they have these amazing sleeper pods for first class and business class. Also there were empty seats, which is really a great benefit on a long flight! Anyone going to Japan should try to get on ANA. We flew home on United and it was so not-special. I was looking at the brochure to figure out if I could use ANA next time I fly to the west coast (no dice).
Have a great time at Estrella! I don't suppose you're going to make the excursion to Pennsic again any time soon? Estrella is a bit out of my range (Pennsic is commuting distance), and my friends have been goading me into Gulf Wars recently so I think three might be a little unreasonable....

3. Don't know if Pennsic is in the budget monetarily or in terms of available time off this year - I have a wedding in May to deal with first.
