Him: I'm looking for someone to make me Japanese court garb.

Me: (In a nutshell) I've never taken commissions before because of all the horror stories I keep hearing about customers, but might consider it. What do you want, how much do you expect to pay, etc.

Him: I dunno. And I'm broke right now.

Of course you are.

Well, at least you got that out of him before you started. Better wasting typing than wasting materials.

LOL!!!!

I don't think you did bad, you just need to price your time at a minimum of $10/hr.

The fact that he was broke and asked this..... was he hoping to trade in kind?

I got the impression that he would like to have something made once he has the money to do so, he just can't do it now. He gets karma points for being as straight with me as I was with him.

BTW, YOU can't afford me either. ;-D

LOL!!!

I would pay MUCH more than $10/hr, but I'm not shopping! ;)

Dunno what you were looking for, but it sounds as if He was looking for Free Court Garb. So assuming you weren't looking to do some pro bono costuming, your pre-emptive deflection seems to have worked pretty well :->

I don't get the whole 'court garb' thing. People change clothes to go to court?

If you're a big, sweaty fighter guy? Yeah, maybe. Probably.

And what do you wear to Twelfth Night? The nice stuff, right?

(Japanese stuff also tends to have degrees of formality.)

I think it's the word Court I'm choking on. :-) I have nice clothes, indoor clothes and party clothes. I just don't have clothes that I'd wear just to go to court.

But there are... there's my official Court clothing (depending on the court this can mean hoeki-no-ho sugata, ketteki-no-ho, suikan-hakama (I need a suikan... the only major garment type I don't have. But I digress), hitatare-kamishimo, or kataginu), there are my bumming around clothes, there are my working clothes... Of course, there are also times I have to change my geographical origins, too.

I think I've only done three changes of clothing at a non-fighting, non-performance event. Possibly four with fighting or performance art, but I can't recall. I have been known to bring a chest of clothing with me to a one day event, though.

You mean making clothes cost money? I mean we just have to go down to the fabric store and buy like, one, two yards of fabric, right? That should only be like a couple of bucks.

It'll only take you like an hour to do, so you won't charge me too much, right? Like $10?

:hugs: That's really frustrating. I know that I am the very lucky beneficiary of others' sewing skills for my best garb - including the stuff I still need to lose weight to get into! And I have had the good fortune that those pieces were all made pro bono . But I also know what they're *worth*. Well beyond my means, absolutely - figure journeyman's wages of [minimum] $25 to $35 an hour for 15+ hours and the time and skill alone are worth $375 - $525 minimum And that's for a basic cotehardie.

Well, I'm glad to see this because I was thinking of offering to help. However, I think a bit more initiative and thought is called for on his part.
