and there are the Big Hats in kagemusha gallery #36. I think I need to do the research so maybe I can bring one of them back from Japan when I go in fall. I hope some of the guys look at these; they really give a good idea of the range for late period men's clothes.

"Kagemusha" is one of my favorite movies for costumes, just because you can see so many that are not just accurate, but accurate reproductions. It kind of looks like someone raided a few museums just so they could outfit the cast.

BTW, you probably realized this, but the kataginu in the dance scene is the one from the famous portrait of Nobunaga. I believe the standard and his armour are also drawn from at least pictorial if not extant examples.

http://www.kurosawamovies.com/gallery/v/kagemusha/kagemusha12.jpg.html (http://www.kurosawamovies.com/gallery/v/kagemusha/kagemusha12.jpg.html) shows Ieyasu wearing another replica, I believe, with the aoi crest splattered everywhere.

Now, could you imagine if they did that for an historical European drama?

I didn't get as far as the dance scene the other night. I have no idea if the aoi dofuku is a replica, but it looks like it could very well be. SO pretty!

Lately I've been watching an anime show called Mushi-Shi and jonesing for a rustic Japanese farmhouse and all their living accessories! The show doesn't attempt historic accuracy but has this strange fantasy sensibility where all the farm and forest people live very traditional lifestyles even though the hero runs around in a barracuda jacket and jeans. So, not a good reference, but still inspiring.

I should watch Kagemusha, maybe I can get inspired about my Pennsic garb projects!
