....because I was up all night with horrible heartburn. Breakfast was a mug of water. Lunch is probably going to be a mug of water and maybe some toast.

The demo was, well, kinda lame. Considering that admission and parking for the Santa Clara County Fair is free, it was pretty sparsely attended. Not sure what they do in terms of advertising or what, but their website was pretty bare. The exhibition building I went through to use a restroom had something like a half a dozen vendors in it. And once the stage across the road started up with amplified music I was pretty much done with the hurdy gurdy.  (The C&W group wasn't half bad. However, the pop singer who insisted on using a vocoder on every single number needs to be taught the difference between cake and icing!!)

If you bring an inkle loom or other hand work to a demo, more people might be interested in what you're doing if you're not hiding behind a freaking table where they can't see what you're doing. Granted, armor and fighting is more sexy, but still. Being able to roam the event site with the hurdy gurdy is such a win-win proposition. I could tell people to come down to where the demo was set up, I could answer questions while people were watching the fighting.

Several people asked some variant of the question why wasn't I in Japanese. (Answer: hurdy gurdy is demo friendly.) Furthermore, Erzebeta asked whether I'd registered my Japanese name or not because she's toying with registering an Indian one. (I should register it. I really should. Though I should also come up with a device to go with it.)  Reassuring to know that Saionji has become part of what's expected in The Most Eurocentric Kingdom.

If you ask me to play for dancing, it would be nice if you knew how to teach dancing in the first place. Much less dance - I even gave you a four count and you still started your partner off ahead of the beat every single time.  However, the handful of times I have encountered you at events before taught me you are an uncorrectably socially inept idiot, so this should not have surprised me in the slightest.

Artos and Saeunn, however, each thanked me separately several times just for showing up. Got to spend a bit of time with some folks I didn't know very well, all of whom (socially inept moron in bad yellow houppelande notwithstanding) seem like a nice bunch.

Nather is the Irish Bomb. Brought a smile to me face, he did, when he told me he loved the way I showed up at a certain Prince of the Mists' Investiture.

Haven't done a darned thing today. Watched the daffy "Young Einstein" On Demand, begging the question, what ever happened to Yahoo Serious? Fell asleep in the middle of "The Big Country," (not surprisingly, it's a damn long movie).

It must have been very impressive at investiture.

Thank you for playing for the dancing. I'm sorry I wasn't there, I tried to get some of the dance regulars out for the demo, but everybody seemed to be off to Pennsic or CostumeCon.

Oh gosh, you know Illadore too! And she's leaving, which is California's loss. I have been sorely tempted to try to do some armor lacing, but I know my hands couldn't possibly take it. Looking at all the gorgeous lacings at the Samurai exhibit gave me bad thoughts. :)

Not to encourage "bad thoughts," but have you been here yet? http://www.sengokudaimyo.com

...oh dear.

Actually, I'm safe from at least some of those, but my other half is going to drool over those maps.

Hey, do you happen to know anything about kumihimo, either with a drum or the little cards? I am interested in learning more, but I'd like to see it in action or try it out a bit first, to see if my aching hands will cooperate.

No, but takadai_no_tora, who reads my journal, is a kumihimo artisan and teacher, and all around wonderful person. If you want to drop her a messsage and tell her I sent you, she could probably give you a better idea what's involved and how to get started. (BTW, she has a special education background that lends itself to understanding disabilities and finding ways to work with them!)
