You can imagine my trepidation as I left the office. There were patches of blue sky over the parking lot, but I could see black clouds setting up directly west of the freeway.  It at least waited to start raining until after I got inside the office. Dr. H and Johnny (his hulking Russian dental assistant) were ready for me immediately.  If we go by what the clock in my truck dashboard read when I shut of the ignition and when I turned it back on to come home, I had a shitload of dental work performed on me in about 70 minutes.* Given the very real threat of losing power while he was wrist deep in my mouth with tools, I'm appreciative of the speed with which I was numbed up, had three very old silver fillings removed and replaced, plus three new ones drilled and filled. I heard thunder over the drill at several moments, as well as hail banging on the skylight in the exam room next to us.  The upper right wisdom tooth extraction was mercifully quick. "You're going to feel a bit of press- CRACK!!!!!!!!!. Congratulations, Lisa, it's a girl."  Friggin' commedian. He seems to think I should be able to manage on Advil, but said to call if I decide I need something stronger. I picked up a ginormous jamocha milk shake that'll probably be two meals, just on principle, took two Advil as soon as I got home and should be able to pull out this annoying wad of cotton by the time I get done writing this.
I get the upper left wisdom tooth and the rest of my filling replacements in March.  (*Does not include another 5 to 10 minutes to settle up with the front desk and make the next appointment.)

You were able to drive yourself home after all that? You're made of sterner stuff than I am....

It was done under local anesthesia and the ride home is only about five minutes.

My oral surgeon used both a general and a local anesthetic, but I think that even with just a local, I'd've needed a ride home (because I'm a wuss).

It also helps that you have someone to give you that ride home. ;-D.

Well, yes, that's true (in that case it was Dad (my upper wisdom teeth erupted when I was 21), but in my post-collegiate bachelor days, I did have a friend who lived nearby that "rescued" me a time or two).

I'm glad that my dentist's office is within walking distance of home, in any case :-)

Foolish me at 24 with all 4 wizzdumb teeth in, and impacted - I had all 4 out on a "morning off" from work. I had a coworker take me to the oral surgeon's office, got doped up on IV Valium and an O2 nose-clip, and he chiseled away at all 4, added stitches, and my coworker pick me up just before lunchtime. I went back to the office intending to work the rest of the day. After perhaps 30 minutes of non-productive staring at my PC in a haze, my manager wanders by, looks at me, and says "Kevin, you're green - go home". I went. And called in sick the next two days. And got a tetracycline capsule I was supposed to take to avoid infection in the wounds, stuck in one of the tooth sockets, instead, where it burst, causing a gagging fit.
Not my finest hours.
