The Cunning Plan so far: check the National Weather Service website at 3:30PM for a final update on weather conditions to the south, because weather forecasters like to err on the side of apocalyptic and sometimes they do get it wrong. However, I've been stuck crawling through the Grapevine in the dark before with just rain to gum up the process. I do not want to have buy chains and try to put them on my truck in the dark if I don't have to.

101 south and across LA on 10 will avoid elevations likely to get smacked with snow. This adds about an hour and a half to my travel time, but should be somewhat less hair raising. I'll find somewhere to stop overnight, hopefully east of San Bernardino if I make decent time. If last year was any indication, I'll probably wake up stupid early anyway and then head the rest of the way to Estrella.

SHouldn't be 1 1/2 hours more. When we go to LAX, if we take 101, the difference is only ~1 hour.

Good luck and drive carefully!! I am thinking about flying south to take pictures of the whole Salton Sea sometimes next week...

Well, based on my trek through the desert 2 years ago, I heartily recommend the first stop in North Palm Springs (just past 29 palms) - when the engine went out on the car at 10 pm, the stop right there (Exxon or Chevron, don't remember which) were EXTREMELY helpful - and the Motel 6 across the highway was comfortable, too. If I were still in that time zone, I'd make it a point to stop there. And when I left the next day around 2 pm, I was able to get to Tucson on a good drive out of there, so the drive to Estrella shouldn't be too difficult from that location.

Have fun at war!
