I realize I'm old, but I remember when a glass bottle of soda contained anywhere from 8 to 12 fluid ounces. (My grandparents used to buy wooden cases, one of Coke, one of assorted A-Treat flavors from the local A-Treat distributor.  Mmmm, black cherry.)

I made the mistake this afternoon of ordering a large iced tea with lemon at the Jack in the Box around the corner because some corner of my brain thought a large might be, what, 20 ounces?

So this plastic vat looms out the drive through window and I have to use both hands to take possession. The fit into the cup-holder of a 1999 Toyota Tacoma is snug.  I couldn't lift it one handed until I drank off the top pint - which took more than half an hour. Holy crap!!!  Yet people routinely order non-diet sodas this size? JITB lists a 44 ounce fountain Coke at 499 calories, 137 grams of carbs (all sugar). Hell, their Hamburger Deluxe with cheese clocks in at 445.  Iced tea (Lipton) with lemon and no sugar comes in at 9 calories and 327 mg of potassium, which, given the diuretic properties of tea, is no bad thing.

Turns out JITB's 20 serving is the "small."

Yeah, small, medium, and large really have no meaning anymore. There are now billboards showing a 2-pack of 2 litre bottles with the information that it's sufficient for a dinner serving for a family of four. It's insane.

There's a reason I love tea over all other caffeinated beverages...

I never know what size to order since each place has its own ideas about what a small or large is.
Either the cup is tiny with 86% ice with a little pop in it or a huge cup that barely fits in my car cup holder. The price difference doesn't help you estimate how much bigger one size is either since you can pay 12 cents more and get 4 times the volume.

I recently ordered the appetizer serving of a dish called (IIRC) "Bonatas" at a local Mexican restaurant. It was nachos with a different name. :-)

I ate about an eighth of it for lunch, Greg and I ate more of it for dinner, and I still threw almost half of it away. That's just dumb. NO ONE needs to eat that much at a sitting, ever.

If you really want to have fun, look at the serving size information on some of those things we've always assumed were single serving.

And in the same manner, clothing sizes (especially in the girls/juniors sections) have also undergone the same metamorphosis. Jeans & shorts that they consider to be "1" or "3" are HUGE. I guess to keep the child's ego from being damaged if they were to be forced to look at a size "13" or "15"?

The jeans I am wearing say size 6 on the label which is crazy. But I bought them at a fat lady clothes store and my real size is closer to 26. Cuz a smaller number makes me feel less fat?

I have developed a fondness for McD's sweet tea but since it's really the same as non-diet soda I have issues with the fact that it only comes in a 32 oz size. [sigh] Boy and I split one sometimes and that makes it more manageable but I do wish it came in a sensible portion.
