The good part. I decided to day trip Crown, thereby bypassing the need to be irritated by the SCA's need to pervert the concept of devotional vigil into brainwashing with snacks, the where-am-I-going-to-camp-now drama of arriving late on a Friday night now that I have freed myself from the giri of camping with those with whom I used to camp. Not to mention being stranded in the Central Valley for an entire weekend in high summer.

The bad part. I slept later than I meant to. I had carefully measured and labeled several pieces of fabric that I was going to donate to the silent auction - and then didn't realize I'd left them on the coffee table until I was on the far side of the Carquinez bridge.

The good part. I arrived at the tail end of court morning court, which meant I didn't have to sit in the hot sun through through a metric buttload of peerages for people I only know by sight. I am a little sorry (but only a little) I missed Ximon's but I ran into him shortly afterward and was able to give him a congratulatory hug.  I have faith that he will not turn into a self-aggrandizing, lying, lazy, more-important-than-thou butt as a result of having become a Pelican.

The bad part. The tourney didn't start until very late and there were something like seventy combatants in the lists. I feel for the Ladies In The Purple Cave who had to do all the paperwork to make a nightmare like this run smoothly.

The good part, I copped some shade with Edward and Gwenhwyfar, which meant children rolling around underfoot, but that's OK.   I also visited the Hot Chicks' sun shade for a bit. Good to see Krysta, who was up with from Vegas with her little boy for the weekend. Liam has words now. Hard to tell with a kid that young, but when I asked if he remembered me, he said yes. He hung out in the dog pen very contentedly with the whippets, Ziggy and Fenris. Had a nice visit with Vigdis and Flidais and Edith - Sylvie was darting in and out feeding and watering the Fergus. Instead of being Too Busy To Notice My Presence as happened at Investiture, Eilis pretended nothing was wrong and deigned to speak with me.  (There is nothing to pretend about. I am a free agent who is no longer obligated to do other people's chores, therefore, she is quite right and nothing is wrong.) Fergus was having a very good day, fighting wise, and he received the Wreath of Chivalry (I think?) at the end of the tourney.

The good part, [profile] vsct_caius made it. He's moving slowly, post surgery, but he's moving, which is the important part. I think it was good for him to come out and visit with friends. The fact that it also allows me time to dish smartassery on basic general principle is merely a bonus.

The good part, I looked cooler than I felt and was probably a lot cooler than most people in light colored Japanese kosode. ([profile] barone_antonio, take note of the cool part. Black is less cool, ya know.) The flea market kimono is a scootch too narrow for a period silhouette, but I'd let it out as far as it would go and retailored the sleeves to a more period shape and started the day wearing it under the striped kosode. It looked decent and [profile] yolsgaard gave it her seal of approval. She's been doing the diet and exercise thing and she looks terrific. You go, girl!

EDIT: The good part, I bid $5 and won on an unlined, lavender jacquard kimono with a very subtle cherry blossom motif. It's exactly the sort of thing [profile] yolsgaard would call "age appropriate"* for me to use for modern purposes should I so desire. It's in very good condition and I can retailor it to be worn as an underlayer or to be a loaner (see below). There was a white silk kimono one with a colorful noshi pattern on it that Marsaili bid on. She's welcome to it. It was a knock-out, but not really my style.

*This is not a catty backhand. Far from it! Traditional kimono styles have a language all their own, ranging from casual to formal, from girlish exuberance to elegant chic. I admit I am still just learning the nuances of "kimono code," but Her Grace paid me a compliment.

The bad part, lurking in the shade as much as possible meant not getting to visit with everyone I might have liked to. I never did find Hosokawa Sanosuke, though we had talked about trying to meet and say hello, though I did see Takeshi-dono and his lady and Shishio-dono. Yukiko-hime and I did manage to pow-wow about the Japanese themed feast in August. I have offered to bring extra clothing with me to lend to guests. I also told her about the fall Coronet sake tasting I hope to put together and invited her.

The good part, while we were not able to induce Rolf and Aurora to blow off evening court, Rolf and Gaius blew off the chiv meeting. Mongolian Barbecue at the place in Citrus Heights ensued. I am mortified that I can not remember the name of the lovely lady from Oertha who joined us.

Twice as many good parts as bad parts. And none of the bad parts sound that bad, really. Sounds like a very nice day!

That lady was Mistress Clare Elena of Strathclyde, former Stellanordica Herald (back when I was Vesper Principal Herald).

The heat was hot. I made a couple of rounds around the Eric but mostly was a slug in R&R's pavilion. I got to visit with an old friend up from Ansteorra (THE Sir Trude Lacklandia!) and generally had a good time.

Between the tourney running loooong and evening court running loooooooooong, it was around 8pm when we got out of there. Any later and we'd have been having dinner at McDonald's. Bleh! And I went home rather than hanging out at R&R's (since they were going back to the event for a while), so I missed the Pel and Laurel meetings today as well. Ah, well...

Oh, and I enjoyed your smart-assery as well. There's NO place like home! (Remind me next time I get a wild bug up my butt...)

1. Thank you. You know what a spaz I am about names. It usually takes a couple of meetings for them to stick, a luxury I cannot afford with folks from as far away as Oertha.

2. Geez, and people wonder why I think "peer" means "useless slacker." NOW who's going to remind the council what a menace to The West As We Know It I am if you don't? Let's see, who can I offend next....

2. I have tried telling you that if the grass looks greener, it's probably Astroturf. Do you listen? ;-D

Um, Trude's from Atenveldt. Another one of those "A" Kingdoms.

Getting old...

An Easterner's View of the World:
East... lots of A Kingdoms... West

A Northeasterner's View of the World:
Us... Pittsburgh... lots of M states... that place where we ski (Colorado)... California.

But I can't speak for you, Gaius, since you were born Westie.

A Westerner's view of the world: "Kingdoms? What other kingdoms?" Whoever thought that one up should be stabbitied with something hard, sharp and medieval.

An Easterner's view of the SCA:
"The West started it. But we got it right!"

Yup, that's about right. I've always loved the New Yorker's View of the World that has a lot in the 5 boroughs, a little in NJ, and California on the distant horizon.

However, I would like to correct one thing: I wasn't born a Westie (nor a Yorkie, either. We Westies say "Westerner." *GRIN*). My first 3 years ('76 through late '79) were in what was then the East and shortly became Atlantia (my second "event" was the planning meeting for the Principality of Atlantia). I was also a Marklander for much of that time... I moved to the West in late '79 and have, for the most part, been there ever since. Certainly all my peerages (how's that for stuffy? ALL my peerages. *GRIN*) are from the West. My AoA and second QoC are from the East.
