1. Written for JAF, who showed me a rather blood-and-guts skaldic verse a friend of his wrote about him.

Lashing scarlet blade
Showers the trampled snow with
Blossoms of ruin.
This dewdrop life is a fight,
Each day a small victory.

2. Stencil was cut for the secret project (if I refer to it as such, I don't have to f-lock this post), paint was applied for Part 1. Discovered I didn't have any green for Part 2, necessitating a trip to a craft store. Hope to finish Secret Project tomorrow.

3. Weather was too nice to stay inside, so I ended up combining the craft store run with a visit to Borders, which is looking sad, picked over and kinda lame these days. Nonetheless, I discovered that Carrolly Erickson has made the leap from writing Tudor biographies (a number of which I recall reading some years ago) to historical fiction, so I acquired The Tsarina's Daughter, as well as a copy of Iain Pears' Stone's Fall, which looked interesting.

4. So, I was looking at things for the Arizona trip and recalling that Sedona, while located in outstandingly gorgeous country, was, to my recollection possibly more weird and irritating that Berkeley and at least Berkeley has Moe's Books and Stone Mountain and Daughter to redeem itself with. (A stroll through Yelp.com reinforces my recollection of a proliferation of Really Bad Art and overpriced food.) There's an air museum near Williams, AZ, that might be a pleasant diversion, seeing as I have to go through Wiliams to get to the Grand Canyon anyway. And I recall that the Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff was terrific.

5. No bites on Rising Sun. Disappointing, but with the economy as it is, not terribly surprising.

In regards to point 1--elegantly gruesome. I like it.

I win! The original piece he showed me was all blood rain and gore stains. I have also include an allusion to JAF's nickname. Hint: it isn't Blossom.

I'm not sure if Borders is going to make it. A lot of things that are happening now (they're renegotiating with publishers on late payments, one major distributor has already cut them off and some of their top brass is bailing) sounds very much like what happened to Suncoast/Musicland when they went bankrupt some 5 years ago, when I was working there. And yes, our store was one of the hundreds that were closed and liquidated.
